Karang Bangun is name of a village in
Karanganyar, Central Java, Indonesia. Probably cold place for those who are not
accustomed to it. Eventhough, people here said that cold was their good friend,
it kept them away from the heat of sunlight. Most of people activity here is
collecting stones and sand from stream then selling them. They usually come to the
main stream at 7 am then go home at 11 am. Kasiyem, one of the collectors said,
if last night rain come, all the materials like stones and sand come down by
the stream in large quantities.
When they are
working, they start to dredge the stream base, lift it up, pour it on sieve, and
then separate stones from sand. The stones will be smashed into pieces and the
sand will be collected for seven days before selling them. The interesting
thing is most of these collectors are women, their husbands usually work as
farmers. “I can’t let my husband work alone, We are family, and We have to run
this family together as long as our lives go” said Kasiyem.
